A Mountain Flower

Streams of melting mountain snow carve the spongy ground
Soften thick the muddy black earth
Sweeten the new grass
And lead me here

To the edge of the forest
Strewn with broken black branches and graying stumps
Beneath tall and slender deep green pines
To kneel in this thick soft decomposing life
That feeds these delicate little flowers
Butter soft petals, pale creamy yellow around a golden center

The flower of Spring and hope fulfilled
Of melting snow, softening tears,
Muddy earth and evening sun
The flower of a heart broken open
